Summary

A widowed mother is terrorized by a stalker with unfathomable intent in a novel of cold-blooded suspense by the Shamus Award–winning author of The Temporary Agent

When Kate Burke is awakened one night by a sound outside her window, her PTSD is triggered。 Was it simply a deer crossing her secluded backyard? Or was it intruders? Because Kate still lives with the dreadful memories of her husband’s murder during a seemingly random home invasion two years before, she knows the answer can mean the difference between life and death。

But when she discovers the unsettling ways her property has been vandalized the next day, Kate is forced to conclude the worst: someone is watching her。

Kate decides to rent out her estranged sister’s onetime cottage, which sits on her property, for the summer。 Another set of eyes around the place won’t hurt。 And with additional support from friends and family, Kate should be feeling safe。

Instead, the vandalism is escalating。 So are the anonymous late-night calls and texts, each one more disturbing and violating than the last。 Whoever is targeting Kate, whatever their motive or terrifying endgame, the footsteps in the dark are getting closer。

It was just a bland story。 It could have used the viewpoint of the antagonist。 Some different viewpoint than the worried on would have been a good change of scene。 Lauren Ezzo is the narrator。 I feel like she did as good of a job as she could。 Ezzo had a pleasant enough voice and really if her narration had been bad, I never would have finished half this story。 Thank you Brilliance Publishing for the complimentary copy of this audiobook with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion。 I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that。。。 my opinions。Check out my Blog: Next Book ReviewCheck out my Facebook Page: Next Book Review Facebook 。。。more

This book follows Kate, a widowed mother terrorized by a stalker, which triggers her PTSD because she lost her husband in a seemingly random home invasion。The story was great, but things were happening at such a slow pace that I almost lost interest。 What I really loved in this book is that we can sense the constant atmosphere of dread felt by Kate。The characters were, in my opinion, unexciting。If you love slow-paced thrillers, you can give this one a shot though。

I recently started to get into Thrillers so I was pretty stoked I won this book off a giveaway。 But as far as Thrillers go, I found this one was lacking。 As many of the other reviews stated, the writing in this book was difficult to get through。 I found myself skimming over a lot because I did not care about themundane tasks Kate does everyday。 I forget how many times I read about Kate stripping the bedsheets off of her and her kid’s beds。 A lot of the writing was pointless and didn’t add to the I recently started to get into Thrillers so I was pretty stoked I won this book off a giveaway。 But as far as Thrillers go, I found this one was lacking。 As many of the other reviews stated, the writing in this book was difficult to get through。 I found myself skimming over a lot because I did not care about themundane tasks Kate does everyday。 I forget how many times I read about Kate stripping the bedsheets off of her and her kid’s beds。 A lot of the writing was pointless and didn’t add to the plot of the story at all。 I would of appreciated the plot twists more if they weren’t so obvious。 At first, the authors does a semi good job on keeping you guessing but then BAM super obvious dialogue between Kate and her stalker that made it clear。 There is also another twist at the very ending that I felt was just breezed through and the way one of the characters just cuts Kate off like everything was her fault extremely irked me。 It felt so out of character for that person。As for all the characters in the story, I couldn’t connect to none of them。 Kate was extremely judgmental and for someone so judgy, she was super trusting to everyone。 Her twins seemed pretty on par for pre-teens。 Everyone else was just blah and didn’t have much depth to them。 Overall 2。5 stars。 。。。more

Looks like many did not like this book。 I did。 I thought it was very good。 A bit long but good。 It lost a star because I figured out fairly quick who was terrorizing Katie。 There is a lot going on in this book but it's not hard to follow at all。 It is an uncorrected ARC so I can't say it has flaws because you know that up front and I personally overlooked any。 Not that I actually saw any but just in case。 Yes I did enjoy this book。 It was a quick read even though it was long。 Most was conversati Looks like many did not like this book。 I did。 I thought it was very good。 A bit long but good。 It lost a star because I figured out fairly quick who was terrorizing Katie。 There is a lot going on in this book but it's not hard to follow at all。 It is an uncorrected ARC so I can't say it has flaws because you know that up front and I personally overlooked any。 Not that I actually saw any but just in case。 Yes I did enjoy this book。 It was a quick read even though it was long。 Most was conversations between people so they read quickly。 This book takes you into the life of a mother, Katie, and her twins。 A boy and a girl。 They lost husband and dad one fateful night during what was going to be a home invasion。 He shot the intruders but he was shot also。 It's sad that he died。 It's sad for his wife who loved him so much and the children who lost their dad。 But Katie gets on with her life as much as she can, while being tormented by someone。Someone is doing things that scare her。 It's like they are trying to make her leave her home。 The one her and her older sister lived in with their grandparents after their parents died。 Rebecca, Katie's older sister, is a bit on the wild side。 She did things that made it hard on their grandparents。 After they died and left everything except the Cottage to Katie, Becca, moved away。 She lived a fairly wild life it seems。 But when Katie calls her for help with the kids she arrives ready and willing to help。 She seems to have changed。 To be more caring and down to earth。 This book really made me feel edgy in many places。 Who could be doing the horrible things。 Damage to the cottage, breaking the window in Katie's home。 Vandalizing the yard and just doing things to scare Katie。 Could they want her out for some reason。 Out of the only home her children have ever know。 Out of the house her grandfather made her promise to never sell。。 And who killed Leif。 Was it really just a botched home invasion or were they sent to do exactly what they did。 Who hated him this much。 This is to me a very good book。 It held my interest all the way through。 It made me shed a few tears。 Ok a lot of them but you know。。。 It even gave me a few laughs。 It had me on the edge of my seat a few times。 Who do you trust。 Could her father in law be a bad person。 The cute guy staying in the cottage a few months。 Her sister。 A neighbor。 A cop she's know all her life and Leif's best friend。 Thank you #NetGalley, #DanielJudson, #Thomas&Mercer for this ARC。 This is my own true thoughts about this book。 4/5 stars。 It lost one because I figured out fairly early who damaged the area。 Other things were a surprise though。 It's very good。 I promise。 。。。more

To say this book was a page turner would be an understatement。 Judson does a phenomenal job switching between gradual and fast paced build up throughout the different segments of this story。 As you get to know the characters, you enjoy the innocence and confusion of the situation at hand。 Katie and her kids are easily lovable, and as the chapters unfold the details of why things are happening, you can’t help but feel heartbroken for the surplus of loss and frustration alongside the small family。 To say this book was a page turner would be an understatement。 Judson does a phenomenal job switching between gradual and fast paced build up throughout the different segments of this story。 As you get to know the characters, you enjoy the innocence and confusion of the situation at hand。 Katie and her kids are easily lovable, and as the chapters unfold the details of why things are happening, you can’t help but feel heartbroken for the surplus of loss and frustration alongside the small family。 This book was an honor to read。 It’s well written, strategically played out, and it only goes to show that you never know what’s truly going on behind closed doors and in somebody’s mind no matter how close you are。 。。。more

This is a really slow burner and if I’m completely honest, I’m particularly impatient and love the thrill kicking off from the very start so this novel is reviewed based on the fact that this wasn’t really for me。 I certainly struggled to push through as the pace is quite subtle。 Whilst I definitely felt a connection with Kate and the loss she was suffering, trying to carry on as a single parent with her 12-year-old twins, I didn’t care enough to rise to the bait as to who was vandalising her pr This is a really slow burner and if I’m completely honest, I’m particularly impatient and love the thrill kicking off from the very start so this novel is reviewed based on the fact that this wasn’t really for me。 I certainly struggled to push through as the pace is quite subtle。 Whilst I definitely felt a connection with Kate and the loss she was suffering, trying to carry on as a single parent with her 12-year-old twins, I didn’t care enough to rise to the bait as to who was vandalising her property and stalking her。 It the beginning, the police, who are called out by her retired police officer father-in-law, believe that it could potentially be one of her students from school。 Kate’s husband, also a police officer, had been killed two years previously by an intruder。 But for me there is something missing with the suspense that I crave and unfortunately, the book lost me。 There were lots of chapters where nothing happened nor added to the back story。 I found some of the writing style quite difficult to know what was going on and perhaps this was the reason for the disconnect。 However just because this is not my type of book, don’t be put off by my opinions as all in all, I could see this as the perfect novel for a different type of reader。 The highlight of the book was the relationship between Kate and her sister Rebecca which is fraught with emotion and when she’s involved in the story more, I definitely sat up and took notice。 。。。more

This was an ok book, a large part of the story is made up of dialogue between the characters, which doesn't allow for a lot of character building。 Kate has recently lost her policeman husband during a home invasion gone wrong, she still lives in the house where it had happened (though he was killed outside the house) with her two kids。 One night she sees two teenagers on her property and in the morning investigates a cottage that is part of the property and owned jointly by her and her estranged This was an ok book, a large part of the story is made up of dialogue between the characters, which doesn't allow for a lot of character building。 Kate has recently lost her policeman husband during a home invasion gone wrong, she still lives in the house where it had happened (though he was killed outside the house) with her two kids。 One night she sees two teenagers on her property and in the morning investigates a cottage that is part of the property and owned jointly by her and her estranged sister。 Inside she finds a knife embedded in the bedroom wall。 The police investigate and her father in law who is a retired police chief。 He suggests getting a tenant for the property and provides the details for a guy that might be suitable, Kate meets him and they come to an agreement。 Not long after more vandalism occurs and the police provide a police officer to watch the property during the night。 Kate invites her sister to stay with her after her neighbour, who usually watches her kids while she's working, is forced to take a job due to an overwhelming debt load incurred by her husband。 I found the story got better after the first part of the book, once the attacks on Kate escalate the plot thickened quickly。 Still it took a very long time to get to that point。 Though I enjoyed the book and would recommend, I wish the author would have trimmed it。 Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC。 。。。more
